YOU KNOW THE MELODY, NOW LET´S TRY THE LYRICS
Picture this. You've just arrived in a new country. Alone. Not for a holiday, but to live, to work. Deep breath. You have never spoken the language before. Not a word. It's a miracle you even found the train. Your phrasebook is attached to your hand but you can't imagine speaking even one word of it to a real life human being! Now the train is picking up speed, travelling further and further from the comfort of the capital city. What do you do?
My four Spanish flatmates and I appeared to live in a musical for my first couple of months here. They would continuosly sing songs to each other! Or so it seemed to me! A beautiful melody, but I couldn't catch the lyrics. And I added the dance moves to this little charade! Trying to get my body to say what my words couldn't. Group conversations and nights out were like five or six tracks playing at the one time. Like a child, I let the words sink into my mind and nestle there before I dared to say them. Being far from home and caught in a whirlwind of strange, new sounds could have been difficult but I'm very lucky to have such a supportive work team around me here at First-Class Language School.
Slowly but surely, Spanish crept into my vocabulary, shocking me a little as I heard such sounds come from my own mouth. I was and still am very much like a parrot, mimicking the sounds of those around me.
It's a privelge learning from native speakers, hearing the words from those who know it best, learning the subtleties and inflections that can't come from a mute text book. To learn a language, the language must come alive. Jump from the paper and into our mouths. After all, what is language primarily for?
In my classroom I am the teacher, but that is a small space. Once I walk out that door, I am the student. This experience has really put me in the shoes of my students and allowed me to greater understand their insecurities, hesitations and equally share in their joy and triumph at hearing that once alien sound come flow melodically from their own mouths.
